Calvert 1810 Antique Reproduction Chess Set & Board
|
Calvert 1810 Antique Reproduction Chess Set & Board
This elaborate early 1800s English Playing Chess Set design, referred to in the literature as a Calvert Pattern, is derived from earlier German designs from the 15th through the 19th centuries. It is often, but wrongly, attributed to John Calvert, a Master of the Worshipful Company of Turners, located at 189 Fleet Street, from around 1790 to 1840. He specialized in exquisitely turned Chess sets in ivory for the aristocracy and in ebony/boxwood for the many coffee shops and clubs where Chess was a popular pastime. Chessmen of this type were actually manufactured throughout the early-to-mid Victorian period by John Jaques of London and Thomas Lund of Cornhill. The Calvert playing sets were ultimately supplanted by the Staunton pattern chessmen, which were introduced to the public in the fall of 1849 by the firm of John Jaques of London. This reproduction is an exact copy, crafted from faux ivory, of an original Calvert Chess set. It dates from around 1810, at which time white and red colored ivory pieces were popular. The slender baluster stems and the unusual form of the King and Queen with their pierced floral crowns, makes an attractive and highly decorative design. The King stands around 3-1/2" tall. The display Chess board box feature two drawers with individual compartments for piece storage.

The Isle of Lewis
|
The Isle of Lewis
Manufactured by the Legendary Jaques of London, these Chessmen are a genuine replica of the world famous Isle of Lewis Chessmen on display in the British Museum. This is the closest reproduction of the historic Lewis Chessmen available today. As with the original, the White and Black armies feature slightly different corresponding characters. The Chessmen were originally discovered in the Spring of 1831 on the Isle of Lewis by a peasant that concluded they were an assemblage of Gnomes and Elves. There were 78 pieces in all, carved in Morse ivory (Walrus tusk) which are thought to belong to eight or more incomplete chess sets. The details of the armor and costume were used by experts at the British Museum to estimate the age of the chessmen to be Scandinavian and from the later part of the twelfth Century (1150-1170 AD). These Romanesque visages are unique in the annals of Medieval Art. Nothing quite like them has been found before or since. There seem to be no counterparts for the very simply adorned, compact, expressive figures with their strong, forceful faces. Experts are unanimous in declaring them the most astonishing collection of ancient chessmen in existence. The Chessmen have an antique Ivory and Brown finish and are cushioned on a layer of burgundy felt. It features a 3 5/8" tall King and is made from a composite of crushed stone and resin, which gives it the look and feel of stone while exhibiting the durability of a composite. The chessmen are brand new and includes both the White and Black Pieces - 32 pieces total. Here is your chance to own a piece of History, the Isle of Lewis Chessmen from the House of Staunton and Jaques of London. This is the SAME SET featured in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone movie.Â
